I had to keep holding my paper up to the light to make sure that my pencil scribbles completely covered where the ink was on the opposite side of the paper. On the reverse side of this paper is the word “Where” that I printed out in Step 6. To do this, we just used a small paint brush dipped in stain, like so: Once you attach the trim, you will need to stain the back edges of the underlayment so that they are not visible when you hang your finished DIY wood signs. If you don’t own a nail gun, don’t worry! A good ol’ fashion hammer and nails should work just fine for these DIY farmhouse wood signs. To attach the trim to the underlayment, my husband used a nail gun and 1″ nails. For a little added dimension, my husband lightly brushed some of this gold acrylic paint ( affiliate) on top of the dried stain. Using a sponge or paint brush, apply stain to your trim pieces. This gives the new underlayment board a rustic and aged look, perfect for farmhouse signs. Make sure to cover the whole underlayment board in white, even though you did not stain the whole board. You don’t want to completely cover the board – just apply a small amount because you will be painting over it.Īllow the stain to dry completely, then lightly paint over the stain with the Behr Frost paint.

He then added some small sawtooth picture hangers at the top center of each frame. To get this look, we used this stain ( affiliate) and Behr Premium Plus Ultra paint in Frost.įirst, using a paint brush apply the stain to the underlayment board using the lightest pressure possible and allowing the natural brush strokes to show. Then my hubby simply used 16 gauge brad nails to attach the furring strips to the outside of the canvas. I did have some of my favorite Weathered Grey stain left, so I stained all of the cut pieces and let them dry overnight before he assembled the frames for me. He cut me 8 pieces of the furring strips at 14″ long, and then another 8 at 13″ long (top and bottom of frame). Once all the painting was done, I enlisted my sweet hubby to run the chop saw for me. So I make sure to use a steady hand and a lot of patience to do it just right the first time. Sure, I had extra canvas to work with, but I really don’t like having to do things more than once. I like to sit down and concentrate on this step. Once all of your templates are traced onto the canvases, then you simply retrace your pencil marks with the paint marker.

I don’t have a fancy light box for tracing, so I just set it up in a window and used the sunlight to highlight it. Then I just traced the font through the canvas using a good old school pencil. I used a couple of pieces of tape to keep the level line on the front, and also to hold in the paper to the back. I just printed each of mine out, and trimmed them slightly to fit in the recessed back of the canvas frame. You may use my templates, or create your own. Now that you have all of your supplies, it’s time to get to work.
